More Than Back Pain: Understanding Spinal Flow Technique
When people think about spinal health they often think only of back pain. But your spine is about far more than posture or tight muscles; it protects one of THE most important systems in your body- your nervous system.
Let’s break it down together. Your nervous system is your control center. It controls and coordinates everything from movement and digestion, to hormones, sleep, stress responses, healing, and emotional regulation. When the nervous system is overwhelmed, stressed, or stuck in patterns of tension, the body can begin to compensate in ways we may not immediately recognize.
This is where Spinal Flow Technique offers a different perspective.
What is Spinal Flow Technique?
Spinal Flow Technique is a gentle, nervous system-focused modality that works with the body’s natural ability to heal and regulate itself. It uses gentle, touch to specific points along the spine which in turn helps clear stress and tension stored in the spinal column.
This technique was developed by Dr. Carli Axford and it is rooted in the understanding that blockages in the spine can interfere with the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Rather than forcing change through manipulation (chiropractic care) or pressure, Spinal Flow focuses on helping the nervous system shift out of stress and protective patterns so the body can begin functioning more efficienty, and encourages better communication between the brain and the body.
The goal is not simply symptom relief, but supporting the body as a whole.
The Nervous System & Stress
Many people live in a constant state of stress without even realizing it. Physical stress can come from injuries, poor posture, repetitive movements, falls or accidents, etc. Chemical stress in the body can occur from inflammation, poor nutrition, certain medications, and environmental toxins. Emotional Stress can stetm from anxiety, burnout, grief, trauma, and chronic overwhelm.
Over time these stressors can create tension patterns within the body and nervous system. Sometimes this shows up as pain, other times it can manifest as fatigue, headaches, jaw tension, digestive issues, sleep disturbances, muscle tightness, or simply feeling “stuck” in your body.
Why The Spine Matters
The spine is not just structural- it is also neurological. The spinal cord acts as a communication highway between the brain and body. When tension, stress, or protective patterns interfere with that communication, the body may begin compensating in ways that affect overall wellbeing.
Spinal Flow aims to help restore ease and adaptability within the nervous system so that the body can move, regulate, and recover more efficiently.
What Does A Session Feel Like?
One of the things people often notice about a Spinal Flow Technique treatment is how gentle it is. Sessions typically involve light touch at specific points along the spine. Many people experience deep relaxation during treatment while others may notice emotional release, muscle relaxation, improved/ease of breathing, reduced tension, increased body awareness, or a sense of calmness or grounding. Because the nervous system is connected to every system in the body, responses can vary from person to person.
More than Symptom Management
While many people initially seek care for pain or tension, Spinal Flow is about more than chasing symptoms. It is about creating an environment where the body feels safe enough to shift out of survival patterns and into healing. The body is constantly communicating with us. Sometimes we simply need to slow down enough to listen.
